Radio is a companion medium. People listen while they drive, cook, work or relax. That makes it a powerful way to reach them in everyday moments. But because listeners are often busy doing something else, radio ads need careful planning to stick.

Choose the right stations and times

Each station has its own character and audience. Think about who you want to reach and when they are likely to be listening. Breakfast and drive time are popular for good reason, but they are not always the best fit. A business audience, a local audience or a younger audience may be found at different times.

Consider digital audio as well, such as streaming services and podcasts, which can extend reach to people who no longer listen to traditional radio as much.

Build enough frequency

A single radio spot is easy to miss. Campaigns usually need repetition for the message to register. It is often better to concentrate your budget on fewer stations or time slots with more airtime than to spread it thinly across many.

Write for the ear

Radio creative is different from print or video. People cannot scroll back to hear it again.

  • Say the brand name early and repeat it.
  • Focus on one idea, not a list of features.
  • Use sound, music and voice to create a picture.
  • Keep contact details simple and easy to remember.
  • Read the script aloud and time it before recording.

Use radio alongside other channels

Radio works well with other media. It can add frequency to a TV campaign, remind people of a message they have seen outdoors, or drive them to search for your brand online. Plan the timing so that channels support each other.

Measure the response

Look at changes in website visits, search interest, calls or store traffic during and after the campaign. Compare periods and regions where possible to understand the effect.

Radio rewards simple ideas, well produced and heard often enough. If you would like help planning an audio campaign, the Northpeak team would be happy to talk.
