Northpeak – deal

The price on a rate card is rarely the end of the conversation. Media owners want to fill their inventory with good advertisers, and there is often room to shape a deal. Good negotiation is not about being tough. It is about being prepared, clear and fair.

Before you talk

  • Know your objective. Be clear on the audience, timing and outcome you need.
  • Know your budget. Decide your limits in advance, including what you would walk away from.
  • Know the market. Compare several options so you understand what is reasonable.
  • Know your flexibility. If you can move dates or accept different slots, that has value.

What you can negotiate

Price is only one lever. Often the extras make a bigger difference to the value you receive.

  1. Better positions or placements within the same budget.
  2. Added-value activity, such as extra spots, digital support or sponsorship mentions.
  3. Guarantees on delivery, with make-goods if targets are not met.
  4. Flexible cancellation or change terms.
  5. Access to audience data and post-campaign reporting.
  6. Rates for longer commitments or combined bookings.

During the conversation

Be honest about what you need and what you can offer. Media owners respond well to advertisers who are clear and reliable. Ask open questions about what is available, especially around quieter periods when inventory may be easier to secure.

Get everything in writing. Confirm the details of the deal, including dates, positions, delivery commitments and any conditions.

After the campaign

Check that you received what was agreed. Review delivery reports, proofs of posting or airtime logs. If something fell short, raise it politely and promptly. Keeping good records also helps you negotiate the next time.

Think long term

The best deals often come from relationships built over time. Treat media owners as partners, share feedback and keep your word. That trust tends to pay off in better opportunities later.

Negotiation is a skill that improves with practice and good preparation. If you would like support with your next media booking, the Northpeak team is happy to talk.
