Testing ads sounds simple. Run two versions, keep the winner, repeat. In practice it is easy to draw the wrong conclusion and end up confident about a result that was mostly luck. A little discipline makes your tests far more useful.

Start with a question, not a variation

Good tests begin with something you want to learn. Do people respond better to a price-led message or a benefit-led one? Does showing a person work better than showing the product? When you know the question, you know what to change and what to keep the same.

Common ways tests go wrong

  • Changing too much at once. If the image, headline and offer all differ, you cannot tell which one made the difference.
  • Stopping too early. Early results often swing around. Give each version enough time and enough results before you decide.
  • Judging on the wrong metric. A high click rate is nice, but it means little if those clicks never turn into enquiries or sales.
  • Ignoring the audience. A message that wins with new prospects may not win with past customers.
  • Forgetting the calendar. Holidays, sales periods and news events can distort a test.

Keep a simple test log

Write down every test in one shared place. Note the question, what you changed, the dates, the audience, the result and what you plan to do next. Over time this log becomes one of the most valuable things your team owns. It stops you repeating old tests and helps new people understand what your audience responds to.

Treat winners as hypotheses

A winning ad is not a permanent truth. Audiences get tired of seeing the same creative, and markets change. Keep testing new ideas against your current best version, and revisit old lessons from time to time to see if they still hold.

Careful testing is less exciting than a sudden breakthrough, but it builds knowledge you can rely on. If you would like help setting up a testing plan that fits your budget, talk to the Northpeak team.
