Out-of-home advertising covers everything from roadside billboards and bus shelters to screens in stations and shopping centres. It is one of the oldest forms of advertising, and it can still be one of the most striking. Planning it well needs a slightly different mindset from other channels.
Think about the moment
People see out-of-home ads while they are on the move. They are walking, driving, waiting or shopping. That context shapes everything. Ask where your audience is, what they are doing and what might be on their mind at that moment.
A sign near a supermarket can prompt a purchase. A poster on a commuter route can build familiarity over weeks. A large screen in a busy city centre can create a sense of scale.
Keep the creative simple
Out-of-home is often seen in seconds. The best designs are bold and easy to read.
- Use a short message, ideally just a few words.
- Make the brand clearly visible.
- Choose strong contrast so it works in different light and weather.
- Avoid tiny text, long web addresses and complex details.
- Check the design at the real viewing distance, not only on a screen.
Classic and digital formats
Traditional printed sites give you a fixed presence for a set period. Digital screens can rotate several ads, change messages by time of day and be updated quickly. Many plans use a mix of both, depending on budget and goals.
Location and coverage
Work with your planner or media owner to understand who passes each site and how often. Look at the spread of locations across your target area, not just the most eye-catching sites. A few well-chosen panels near the right places can sometimes do more than one expensive landmark.
Measuring the effect
Out-of-home rarely produces clicks, so measurement needs some thought. Look at changes in search interest, website visits, store traffic or sales in the areas where the campaign ran, compared with similar areas where it did not.
When it is planned with care, out-of-home can give a brand real presence in everyday life. If you are thinking about adding it to your plan, the Northpeak team would be happy to talk.
