Short vertical video is now a normal part of social media for many audiences. For brands used to polished photography, it can feel intimidating. The good news is that effective short video is more about clear ideas than expensive production. You can start small and learn as you go.

Start with the idea, not the trend

Trends can be useful, but copying them without a reason rarely helps a brand. Begin with something your audience wants to know or feel. Then choose a format that suits it. Useful starting points include:

  • Quick how-to clips that solve one small problem.
  • Behind-the-scenes moments from your team or process.
  • Answers to questions people often ask you.
  • Before and after transformations.
  • Simple product demos that show the thing in use.

Make the first seconds count

People decide very quickly whether to keep watching. Open with the most interesting moment, a clear promise or a question. Avoid long logo intros. Add captions, as many people watch without sound, and captions also make your content more accessible.

Keep production light

A modern phone, natural light and a quiet room will cover most needs. A small microphone can make a big difference to sound quality. Film several clips in one session to build a small library. Batching saves time and helps you post more consistently.

Find your people on camera

Audiences often respond well to real faces. That does not mean everyone must appear on screen. Find team members who enjoy it and support them with simple outlines rather than full scripts. Natural delivery usually works better than a perfect read.

Learn and adjust

Look at which videos people watch to the end, share or save. Make more of what works and drop what does not. Treat the first few months as an experiment.
