Programmatic advertising can sound complicated, full of acronyms and technical diagrams. The core idea is simple. It is the automated buying and selling of ad space, usually in real time, based on data about who is likely to see the ad.

How it works, simply

When someone opens a website or app that sells ad space, an automated auction can take place in a fraction of a second. Advertisers, using buying software, decide whether that impression is worth bidding on and how much to pay. The winning ad is shown.

This happens across a huge number of websites, apps, streaming services and even some digital screens outdoors.

Why advertisers use it

  • Scale. You can reach people across many sites without negotiating with each one.
  • Targeting. You can focus on audiences, contexts or locations that fit your plan.
  • Flexibility. Budgets and creative can be adjusted during a campaign.
  • Measurement. Delivery data is available quickly, which helps with optimisation.

What to watch out for

The same automation that brings scale can also bring problems. Ads may appear next to content that does not suit your brand. Some impressions may never be seen by a real person. Fees can pile up across the different pieces of technology involved.

Good practice includes using brand safety controls, choosing quality inventory over the cheapest impressions, and asking clear questions about fees and transparency. Private deals with trusted publishers can also give you more control over where ads appear.

Is it right for you?

Programmatic works best when you have a clear audience, creative that suits display or video formats, and enough budget to test and learn. For some businesses, search or social media will be a better first step. For others, programmatic is a useful way to extend reach once the basics are working.

Like any channel, it is a tool, not a strategy on its own. If you are wondering whether programmatic fits your plans, the Northpeak team would be glad to talk.
