A single production day can give you far more than one video. With the right planning, the same shoot can supply social clips, website content, stills, ads in different formats and material for months of communication. The key is to plan for repurposing before the camera starts rolling, not after.
Start with a content map
List every place the footage might appear. Think about your website, social channels, paid ads, email, presentations, events and internal communication. For each one, note the format, likely length and shape. This map becomes the foundation of your shot list.
Plan the shot list for flexibility
- Capture wide, medium and close shots of key moments.
- Frame with space for vertical and square crops.
- Record short, self-contained sound bites in interviews.
- Gather plenty of cutaway footage, such as hands, details and surroundings.
- Take still photographs alongside the video where possible.
- Record some clean shots without on-screen people for flexible use.
Interviews that keep on giving
Interviews are a rich source of content. Ask open questions and encourage answers in full sentences, so each clip can stand alone. Cover a few different themes in one session, so you can build several stories from the same conversation.
Organise the footage
After the shoot, label and store footage clearly. Note the best takes, key quotes and useful shots. A little organisation now saves hours later when someone needs a quick clip for a new campaign.
Check the rights
Make sure consent forms, music licences and any talent agreements cover all the ways you plan to use the footage, including paid advertising and the length of time you will use it. It is much easier to agree this upfront than to renegotiate later.
Plan a release schedule
Rather than publishing everything at once, spread the content over time. A main video can launch a campaign, with shorter pieces following over the coming weeks.
Planning for repurposing turns one production into a lasting content library. If you would like help getting more from your next shoot, the Northpeak team would be glad to talk.
