If you have ever stared at a blank calendar wondering what to post, content pillars can help. They are a small set of recurring themes that connect your brand to what your audience cares about. Instead of inventing every idea from nothing, you start from a familiar structure and fill it in.

What a content pillar is

A pillar is a broad topic you can return to many times without running out of angles. For a coffee roaster, pillars might be sourcing, brewing tips, the people in the roastery and customer moments. Each one supports a business goal and gives the audience a reason to follow.

How to choose your pillars

  1. Start with your audience. List the questions, problems and interests they bring to you.
  2. Add what makes you different. Look for topics where you have real expertise or a point of view.
  3. Find the overlap. The best pillars sit where audience interest meets your credibility.
  4. Keep it to three to five. Fewer pillars are easier to remember and produce well.
  5. Test for depth. If you cannot list ten post ideas for a pillar in a few minutes, it may be too narrow.

Using pillars day to day

Once your pillars are set, use them to balance your calendar. Tag each planned post with its pillar and check the mix every week. If one theme dominates, your feed can start to feel repetitive or too promotional. Pillars also make briefing easier. A designer or freelancer can understand the purpose of a post straight away.

Common mistakes

  • Making every pillar about your products.
  • Choosing pillars that sound good but that nobody on the team can speak to.
  • Never revisiting them, even when the audience or the business changes.

Content pillars are not a rulebook. They are a way to post with more focus and less stress. If you want help shaping pillars that fit your brand, have a chat with the Northpeak team.
