Northpeak – growth

Most marketing teams do not have a shortage of numbers. They have too many. When everything is tracked and reported, it becomes hard to tell what really matters. Choosing a small set of key performance indicators, or KPIs, helps everyone focus on the same outcomes.

What makes a good KPI

A KPI is not just any metric. It is a measure that tells you whether you are moving towards an important goal. A useful KPI tends to share a few qualities.

  • It links clearly to a business objective.
  • It can be influenced by the team that owns it.
  • It is measured the same way over time.
  • It is easy to explain to someone outside marketing.
  • It prompts action when it moves up or down.

Balance leading and lagging measures

Lagging measures, such as revenue or new customers, show results but arrive late. Leading measures, such as qualified enquiries or trial sign-ups, give earlier signals. A healthy set includes both. The leading measures help you adjust quickly, while the lagging measures keep you honest about real outcomes.

Watch out for vanity metrics

Some numbers look impressive but say little about success. Follower counts, raw impressions and total page views can all grow without any real business benefit. That does not mean they are useless. They can help diagnose problems. But they rarely belong at the top of a report.

A simple way to choose

  1. Write down your top business goals for the year.
  2. For each goal, ask how marketing contributes.
  3. Pick one or two measures that best show that contribution.
  4. Check that you can track them reliably.
  5. Agree on them with leadership before reporting starts.

Once your KPIs are agreed, keep them stable for a reasonable period, so you can see real trends rather than constant changes in what is measured. A short list of well-chosen KPIs makes reporting clearer and conversations easier. If you would like a hand narrowing down yours, the Northpeak team is here to help.
