Page views are easy to count, so they often become the main way teams judge content. But a popular article is not always a useful one, and a quiet article can still play an important role. To understand what your content is really doing, you need a few more angles.

Start with the purpose of each piece

Different content has different jobs. Some articles attract new visitors from search. Others help existing prospects make a decision. Some support customers after they buy. Decide the main job of each piece first, then choose measures that fit that job.

  • Attract: search visibility, new visitors, and the queries people use to find you.
  • Engage: time spent reading, scroll depth and visits to related pages.
  • Convert: sign-ups, enquiries or downloads that follow a visit.
  • Support: fewer repeated questions to your support or sales teams.

Look at search data as well as site data

Your analytics tool shows what happens on your site. Search Console shows how your pages appear in search before people click. Together, they give a fuller picture. A page with lots of impressions but few clicks may need a clearer title. A page with many clicks but quick exits may not match what people expected.

Combine numbers with feedback

Not everything valuable shows up in a report. Ask your sales team which articles they share with prospects. Ask customers what helped them decide. Note which pieces get mentioned in calls or emails. These signals are harder to count, but they are often the clearest proof that content is working.

Review in batches, not daily

Content performance moves slowly. Checking every day leads to overreaction. Review your content monthly or quarterly, compare similar pieces, and look for patterns. Which topics, formats or angles tend to do well for your audience? Use those patterns to shape your next plan.
