Creator fees can seem unpredictable. Two creators with similar audiences might quote very different prices. That is because a fee reflects much more than follower numbers. Understanding what goes into it helps you budget sensibly and build respectful partnerships.

Creating content is real work

A single post may involve planning, filming, editing, writing captions and replying to comments. Many creators also manage their own admin, invoices and negotiations. Treat them as you would any other creative supplier, with clear agreements and prompt payment.

Factors that shape a fair fee

  • Deliverables: the number and type of pieces, such as short video, stills or long-form content.
  • Production effort: locations, props, extra people or complex editing.
  • Audience relationship: how engaged and relevant their community is to you.
  • Usage rights: how long and where you may use the content, including in paid ads.
  • Exclusivity: any request that they avoid working with competitors for a period.
  • Timelines: rush jobs usually cost more.
  • Revisions: the number of feedback rounds included.

How to approach the conversation

  1. Share your budget range early, so no one wastes time.
  2. Ask for a rate card or a quote based on a clear brief.
  3. Discuss what could change to fit your budget, such as fewer deliverables or shorter usage.
  4. Agree everything in writing before work begins.

Is gifting enough?

Sending free products can be a nice way to start a relationship, but it is not payment for work. If you expect specific content, deadlines or usage rights, you should pay for it.

Pay on time

Late payment damages trust quickly, especially for independent creators. Agree payment terms upfront and stick to them.

It also helps to keep simple notes on what you paid and what you received for each campaign. Over time, this gives you a clearer, more realistic view of costs for future planning.

Fair pay leads to better work and creators who want to partner with you again. If you want help planning a creator budget, the Northpeak team is happy to talk.
