Retargeting lets you show ads to people who have already visited your website or engaged with your brand. Done well, it is a helpful reminder. Done badly, it feels like being followed around the internet. The difference usually comes down to a few simple choices.

Segment by what people actually did

Not every visitor is the same. Someone who read a blog post is in a very different place from someone who added a product to their basket. Group your audiences by behaviour and tailor the message to each.

  • Browsers may need a reminder of who you are and why you are worth a look.
  • Product viewers may respond to details, reviews or a clear benefit.
  • Basket abandoners may need reassurance on delivery, returns or payment.
  • Recent customers usually need a break, or a genuinely relevant next step.

Set sensible limits

Seeing the same ad again and again quickly becomes irritating. Use frequency controls where available, and set time windows that make sense for your sales cycle. A holiday booking might justify a longer window than a low-cost impulse buy.

Always exclude people who have already converted from ads asking them to do the same thing again. Few things damage goodwill faster than being chased for a purchase you have already made.

Refresh the creative

Retargeting audiences are small, so they see your ads often. Rotate creative regularly and try different angles, such as a customer story, a product detail or a useful guide, rather than repeating one message.

Respect privacy

Retargeting relies on data about people’s behaviour. Make sure your consent and privacy practices are clear and up to date, and that visitors understand how their information is used. Trust is part of the experience, not an afterthought.

Measure fairly

Some people who see retargeting ads would have come back anyway. Where possible, compare results against a group who did not see the ads, so you understand the real contribution.

Thoughtful retargeting feels like good service rather than pressure. If you would like to review your approach, the Northpeak team is always happy to talk.
